Jonathan Cuadros
Born to immigrants fleeing the political strife of Eighties South America, Colombian-American photographer Jonathan Cuadros was born and raised in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Before moving to Berlin to pursue photography full-time, he studied creative writing and comparative literature at University of Central Florida.
Cuadros's photographic approach takes cues from his affinity for poetry. "Lichtquellen" is a chronicle or documentary that eschews traditional narrative elements, opting for shadowy vignettes of urban nightscapes, candid portraiture, and off-the-cuff snaps exploring elements of visual-autobiographical and immediacy in (film) photography.
Popularly a standard-bearer for freedom in post-cold war Europe and broiling youth culture Mecca, the Berlin in "Lichtquellen" is a black-and-white ghost town. Monuments, balloon animals, and kindly spaces/faces/places are transfigured by the "dark grainy abyss that one can only find in the city's notorious winter tristesse" into alternating signifiers of loss, hope, isolation, and sometimes humor.
Jonathan's work has been featured in print and online, showcased in international book fairs, as well as in exhibitions in Orlando and Berlin. "Lichtquellen" will have it's book launch party and debut exhibition at coGalleries Berlin on March 24th.
