BEHIND THE MASK — ANAÏS LALANGE

There’s something strangely liberating about hiding your face.

For Anaïs Lalange, masks have become a way to explore identity, self-expression and the expectations placed on us. Designed and handmade by the artist herself, they transform the body into something slightly unfamiliar, sometimes playful, sometimes provocative, always a little unexpected.

With a background in theatre, performance and professional wrestling, Anaïs approaches each image through concept, character and movement. Her masked figures move between vulnerability and confidence, humour and discomfort, creating their own little worlds.

We love the tension between the colourful, almost playful masks and the rawness of the bodies underneath. There’s something wonderfully weird about these images, and we’re very into it.

I wish to inspire resilience and pride in existing beyond what the world may see us as or expect from us, beyond the “masks” and roles that society has us playing, away from expectations.
