Ayu Watanabe is a photographer based in Tokyo Japan. Her work explores femininity, body-positivity and aims to challenge Japanese beauty standards.
“Growing up as a girl in Japan has been uncomfortable for me sometimes. There are so many advertisements which push women to feel ashamed and complexed about their body image. However, I want to celebrate everyone’s scar, tattoo, body hair, cellulite, acne… everything is just so LOVELY to me and i want to help women feel beautiful. It is very meaningful for me that an ordinary Japanese girl like me captures the female gaze.“
