What if you could be born again?
Sicilian-Italian lens-based artist Viviana Bonura explores identity, the body and self-reinvention through self-portraiture and performance.
In Born from Salt, she goes back to the idea of birth as a way to break down everything that has shaped us: family, culture, expectations, and all the things we carry without necessarily choosing them.
Her work often sits somewhere between dreams and reality, exploring liminal spaces, inherited trauma and the blurry boundaries between the self and everything around us.
The result is raw, strange and beautifully intimate.
And then there’s the salt.
White, heavy, protective, and a little bit magical.
First created in 2022, Born from Salt became Viviana’s first self-produced book and solo exhibition, before the work went on to be shown internationally.
Basically, a story about breaking yourself down and building yourself back up. ♡
