A photographic series about disappearing from your own life.
Greek artist Katiana Mekka explores identity, memory and absence in Unbecoming, a mixed-media photographic series about living with chronic illness; a severe form of the neuroimmune condition Myalgic Encephalomyelitis.
Over the past five years, chronic illness has completely changed the way Katiana experiences her life. Looking back at photographs taken before she became ill, she found herself struggling to recognise the person in them: the girl with plans, routines, favourite places, ambitions and a future she could imagine.
So she started erasing herself from those photographs.
Using digital drawing and handwritten text, Katiana removes her own figure from old images, leaving behind empty streets, landscapes and places that once belonged to her. What remains feels strangely quiet, almost like evidence of a life that continued without her.
And that’s what makes Unbecoming so powerful. It’s not only about losing the person you used to be, but about the strange uncertainty of who you are becoming instead.
There’s something incredibly simple and heartbreaking about these empty spaces. The places are still there. She just isn’t.
