A love letter to her mother, in technicolor.
We’re very into LIVING FRAME, a colourful and wonderfully weird series by Italian artist and art director Cecilia Pignocchi.
The project started with a pretty big question: what does it actually mean to be a woman? And instead of looking for the answer in books, theories or very serious feminist conversations, Cecilia went back to the woman who probably had the biggest influence on her answer in the first place: her mum, Raffaella.
The result is a series of playful, surreal photographs filled with bright colours, flowers, old family memories, flying clothes, strange objects and plenty of sky. Her mum appears again and again, sometimes as herself, sometimes almost like a character in Cecilia’s imagination.
Behind all the fun visuals, Cecilia is looking at everything that gets passed down between women ; ideas about motherhood, independence, beauty, strength and what we’re supposed to be.
And we love that she does it without making everything look too serious.
Because sometimes understanding your mother means realising she was never just your mother. She was a woman all along. ♡
