IRIS KAUFMAN — “SENSURAL”

A different kind of art appreciation.

What happens when a nipple enters the frame of a centuries-old painting? Argentine visual artist Iris Kaufman has a rather clever way of finding out.

In “Sensural“, Iris holds a small hand mirror featuring a nipple in front of artworks, landscapes and everyday scenes. Suddenly, the body becomes part of the picture, shifting our attention and changing the way we look at what’s already there.

The photographs play with art history, nudity and the politics of visibility. Why is the naked female body celebrated in a museum painting, yet so often censored when it appears outside that context? Who gets to decide what can be shown, and what crosses the line?

What makes the series even more interesting is that the images are created entirely in-camera, using physical mirrors and carefully arranged perspectives, with no digital manipulation. The illusion is real, even if the effect feels a little surreal.

By bringing the female body into unexpected places, Iris questions the rules that govern how we see it, from cultural conventions to the algorithms deciding what makes it onto our screens.

Same body, different rules. And that’s exactly what Iris wants us to look at. ♡
